The quiet cost of idle cash

Money sitting still loses value every day. A look at why yield should be the default, not a feature you opt into.

Inflation doesn’t send a notification. It works silently, shaving a little off the purchasing power of every unit of currency you hold, and the cash sitting in a checking account feels its weight most.

For decades, earning a meaningful return on cash meant minimum balances, lock-in periods, or access to instruments most people never see. That gap is no longer a technical necessity. It’s a design choice.

Why “default on” matters

Defaults are powerful. When yield is something you have to find, set up, and maintain, most people never do, not because they don’t care, but because life gets in the way.

  • A balance that earns by default removes the homework.
  • Liquidity stays intact: you can spend or move funds whenever you need.
  • The return compounds quietly in the background.

The best financial habit is the one you don’t have to remember.

The trade-offs we watch

Yield is never free of trade-offs: there’s always a relationship between return, risk, and access. Our job is to keep those trade-offs honest and legible, so the number you see is one you can trust.

More on how we think about safety and custody in a future post.
